They go back and forth regarding evening. It is a big challenge to run a restaurant that serves 3 squares daily. Other than a Waffle Shop or a fast food, few owners even try. BTW, “southern style food” was, when the Mecca grew up, a white euphanism for “soul food.”
Nope
The restaurant in not associated with a religion. It happens to be the old restaurant in Raleigh maybe NC that is still open. Lots of old charm and nostalgia - you would enjoy the food and history.
This place is great. It's old, it's small, the prices are right, and the staff is friendly. Great diner in the middle of town.
Chicken was phenomenal. Wonderful home style country cooking and lovely service. Really enjoyed the cozy atmosphere and interesting bar and decorations! Will definitely return
I left it blank but from all the times I came here it deserves 5 stars. But from what I saw tonight in my experience I consider it simply irresponsible for any busy that is open to leave itself so understaffed that I don't fret spoken to until 10min within coming in.no one working the floor except the bartender. I stayed because I simply love the place and the food but didn't get the experience I normally come for.
Best fried chicken in Raleigh. And boy do they give you a lot of it. Plenty to share!
Excellent old school counter top restaurant. The meal was homemade, delicious and inexpensive. Must try in Raleigh.
Food was excellent. Closest thing to your grandmas kitchen. Great prices, portion sizes and vibe. Although it is the oldest restaurant in Raleigh, it is very clean and has maintained the vintage character from the time period. First time there and will definitely not be my last. Thank you for an amazing experience.
I'm glad this place is still going strong after all these years. I love the "diner classics menu" but I wish they still served breakfast all day. Now they just serve breakfast for Sunday brunch. Under new owners, they now have evening hours, & serve alcohol. Prices have gone up. $25 is too much for a diner lunch for 2!
Staff was friendly and helpful with our group of 7, half of which were children. Food was great, home cooked type. I got fried chicken with rice and gravy, mashed potatoes and gravy and fries and that was the best bang for my money I could ever ask for. All of it was amazing.
Just had time for a quick breakfast this morning, so I went to the Mecca. The waitress took care of my order in a timely manner ... my food came without delay and she let me pay so that I could leave as soon as I ate. My breakfast was great - even a turkey bacon option! Now - to those who say the Mecca is “tired” ... that is what I call character!! Please, Raleigh - stop tearing down everything old and cherish local institutions! Many a political gathering of politicians or Supreme Court Justices have been held here - is it cutting edge cuisine? No, but it is great food at a reasonable cost. I would have rather had the cup of coffee I had at the Mecca than anything I have ever had at Starbucks! Support our local institutions ... it is what separates Raleigh from Any City, USA!
Mecca serves delicious, Southern-style diner fare with a warm and friendly atmosphere. We love bringing guests to this historic location and featuring tastings from Mecca as part our Raleigh Walking Food Tour.
We were in Raleigh for the Hopscotch Festival yesterday and literally happened upon this restaurant. First off, it's SO CHARMING. The aesthetic inside and out is so classic. Turns out it was sold last year by the family who ran it for 88 YEARS. Thankfully, the new owner didn't gut it. It's gorgeous and the architecture and fixtures alone are amazing to see. The wait staff was very pleasant and attentive. I had the veggie plate, and it was delicious!!! I especially like the mac and cheese and the fried okra. My friend had the cheese burger, and it looked great, even though I don't eat meat. We had sweet tea; I had mine half and half. It was great. Definitely super happy we found this gem right near the city plaza and were able to experience and support a locally owned establishment rather than a chain restaurant. Will definitely eat here again next time I'm in Raleigh.
Had a fantastic experience here with my kids. The food was served fast and the customer service is just fantastic. Prices are convenient.
Love this place. Had the spaghetti and meat sauce with one of their signature cocktails from the 20s. So fun! Filling and laid back. Tony is awesome and told me about the daily specials. Had a new employee tonight as a server (sorry can't remember your name - maybe Juliet?) that was so friendly and helpful. This is my new favorite spot!
They are a classic greasy spoon. The main draw is they very low prices for what feels like home made food. It's not much to look at but it's value is high.
I have been here a couple of times. I know it is a historical old place and that has its charm but I find the menu very limited and the help is spotty. Portion sizes are on the small side and although prices are reasonable, you don't leave there feeling like you ate much of anything. They need to have more going for them than just being a historical building. The menu on the website is old and does not match current day...
Very cozy, located in downtown Raleigh. The wooden benches and overall ambience is old school, but well kept. Had the ribeye steak and eggs with biscuit, grits, along with side order of pancakes. All was good except the biscuits which were kinda dry, but overall was very satisfied with the food and service.
Wonderful old fashion perfect Southern breakfast with an ambience which transports you to 1930s. A must visit in Raleigh NC..friendly, accepting, easy-going.
We hit it on a really bad night of under staffing. However, the bar staff that became everyone's waiter/waitress were great. The BBQ pork was really good.
Lovely little restaurant, quick service, and low cost as well. I can't speak for weekends, but I went during the week and there was one other person and a family and the rest of the place was empty. Perfect for a nice quiet start to the day.
Stunning Mesozoic era dining hall with frightening Art Deco gargoyles extracted from the ruins of Martha Stewart’s lost sex dungeon. The upstairs bathroom features a small sink which is next to a paper towel dispenser which is next to a hand soap dispenser which is next to a fire extinguisher filled with sweet sweet dolphin blood. The collard greens are super dank and they are packed with the nutrients you need for a successful armed robbery or dance contest.
Been in business for 90 years. It shows. Great food and a great price. Wonderful staff to boot. The building is awesome and they have an old ham. Go and see it for yourself
After getting no service at another place downtown we were surprised to get such great service at a place we happened upon. Established in 1930, the decor will give you old school Raleigh vibes. There's even an autographed photo of Cherie Berry who has kept our elevators safe for years. Anyways, the seating, ordering and eating process took 24 minutes at 2 p.m. on a Sunday. The biscuits and gravy were flavorful, the pancakes were thick, the turkey bacon properly crisped, and the egg and cheese croissant was warm through the last bite. I'd highly recommend them for a laid back brunch in the heart of downtown.
One of the best old school restaurants in Raleigh. Food has been constantly good for the last 20 years I have been going there. Their Cheese Burger is perfect. Meat and 2 for lunch. Never disappoints.
I've had their breakfast and their lunch there and they have both been amazing. The booths are a little run down but I think it adds to the appeal of the place. It has a very small town diner feel to it and the prices to go with it but the food is top notch. This has all the comfort foods you can think of and it has a cozy feel to it. I'd recommend it for a rainy day when you're looking for a good place to have some good food to cheer you up. I'd recommend it for every other day too though.
North Carolina comfort food is delicious! I've heard about the Mecca my entire life (over 5 decades) as a place where politicians informally met to hammer out compromises. This past week brought my first visit and I was not disappointed. Everyone in my group choose Eastern NC pork barbecue, which is vinegar based. Though it was a bit sweeter than the typical recipe, it was good. The collard greens were unquestionably the best I've ever had, despite the fact that I grew up in a home that served them often. The waitress and restaurant manager we're friendly, and even shared (in detail) be how to cook the collard to get someone results. I gave four stars because the restaurant itself is a step into the past. It hasn't been updated in decades and could use a fresh coat of paint.
Delicious food. Great cooking, easy going staff and delicious fried chicken. Cleaned the plate.
Our first time visiting Mecca. Definitely a hidden gem in downtown Raleigh. The atmosphere is like a old time styled diner. The have 2 levels so me as a parent love the fact that upstairs is a little bit private so my toddler doesn't disturb the peace. I had Beef Tips on rice & gravy, w/ a side of fruit. My husband had the Chopped Pork w/ fries. We both enjoyed our dishes very much our server Kincannon was superb. We will return & try other dishes. Pricing was excellent
Loved coming here for breakfast, the prices were absolutely cheap for great home-made food. The pancakes were delicious and the country ham biscuit was as if Grandma made it. Coffee was simple but great tasting and the service was great. Quaint place with lots of history.
Nice historic downtown restaurant. Good food. Will go again. .h
Has that old-fashioned diner feel. Classic decor from a time gone by. Stool seating at bar or booth seating. The upstairs is more spacious. There is also some outside seating on a nice day. Warning: you will not be impressed by the restrooms. But you will be impressed with the food and the service! Staff was friendly and fast. Food was delicious! Menu features fried chicken, burgers, catfish, pulled pork, shepard's pie, and more. It's a good mix of options, and very reasonable prices for being downtown.
